நம் அன்பிற்குரிய ஐயா, முருகு சுப்பிரமணியம் தமிழ் இலக்கியத்திலும் இதழியலிலும் ஒரு மாற்றத்தை ஏற்படுத்திய நபர். தமிழ்நாடு, மலேசியா, சிங்கப்பூர் ஆகிய மாநிலங்களில் இவரது வாழ்க்கை பரவியிருந்தது. இந்தியாவின் தமிழ்நாடு, புதுக்கோட்டை மாவட்டத்தில் உள்ள கோணப்பட்டு 1924 ஆம் ஆண்டில் சிவகாமி ஆச்சி மற்றும் திரு முருகப்பன் செட்டியார் ஆகியோருக்கு பிறந்த இவர், இளம் வயதிலிருந்தே தனது குறிக்கோள்களில் உறுதியாக இருந்தார். கோணப்பட்டு அவர் விநியோகித்த ஒரு எளிமையான கையால் எழுதப்பட்ட பத்திரிகையுடன் அவரது பயணம் அவரது இளமையில் தொடங்கியது. தமிழ்ச் சமூகம் மற்றும் இதழியல் மீதான இந்த ஆர்வம் இவரை தமிழ்நாட்டில் 'குமரன்' வார இதழின் உதவி ஆசிரியர், பொன்னி மாத இதழின் இணை நிறுவனர் மற்றும் மலேசியாவில் தமிழ் நேசன் செய்தித்தாளின் தலைமை ஆசிரியர் போன்ற பொறுப்புகளை ஏற்க வழிவகுத்தது.

எங்கள் ஐயாவின் வாழ்க்கையில் குடும்பம் முக்கிய பங்கு வகித்தது. வாழ்நாள் முழுவதும் அவருக்கு உறுதுணையாக இருந்த வள்ளியம்மை ஆச்சியை மணந்தார். இவர்களுக்கு செல்வம், பாண்டியன், டாக்டர் கலைமணி, பொன்னி, சுப்பையா என ஐந்து குழந்தைகள் பிறந்தனர். பன்னிரண்டு பேரக்குழந்தைகளுக்கு தாத்தாவாகவும், பத்தொன்பது கொள்ளுப்பேரக்குழந்தைகளுக்கு கொள்ளுத் தாத்தாவாகவும் இருந்தார். அவரது குடும்ப வாழ்க்கை அன்பு மற்றும் பரஸ்பர மரியாதையால் குறிக்கப்பட்டது, ஒவ்வொரு உறுப்பினரும் அவர் விட்டுச் சென்ற மரபுக்கு பங்களித்தனர்.

தமிழ் இலக்கியத் திறமையை வளர்ப்பதில் அவரது அசைக்க முடியாத அர்ப்பணிப்பு உண்மையிலேயே உத்வேகம் அளிக்கிறது. மலேசியத் தமிழ் எழுத்தாளர் சங்கத்திற்கு அவர் ஆற்றிய பங்களிப்புகளும், 1966 ஆம் ஆண்டில் நடைபெற்ற முதல் உலகத் தமிழ் ஆய்வு மாநாட்டில் ஒரு தலைவராக அவர் ஆற்றிய முக்கிய பங்கும் - தமிழ் இலக்கிய வரலாற்றில் ஒரு குறிப்பிடத்தக்க நிகழ்வு - அவரது அர்ப்பணிப்பை வெளிப்படுத்துகின்றன. 'நீதிவெண்பாவின் அறம்', 'தமிழ் கூறு நல்லுலகம்' உள்ளிட்ட பல இலக்கியப் படைப்புகளுக்கு அவரது விரிவான பயணங்கள் ஊக்கமளித்தன.

Murugu Subramaniam, our beloved Iyya, was a transformative figure in Tamil literature and journalism. His career spanned across Tamil Nadu, Malaysia, and Singapore. Born in 1924 in Konapet, Pudukkottai District, Tamil Nadu to Sivagami Achi and Mr. Murugappan, Iyya showed an interest in journalism from an early age. His journey began with a modest yet passionate endeavor—a handwritten magazine that showcased his early commitment to journalism. Crafted with care on a simple notepad and bound together with thread, this labor of love represented Iyya's first foray into the world of publishing. With determination, he personally distributed his creation throughout Konapet, sharing his ideas and nurturing a connection with his community. This early venture, born from his deep-seated love for Tamil literature and journalism, laid the foundation for his future career and showcased his dedication to sharing knowledge and fostering community engagement from a young age.

Iyya's passion for journalism and his deep commitment to the Tamil community propelled him to undertake several influential roles throughout his career. His journey through the world of Tamil literature and media began with his position as assistant editor for the weekly magazine 'Kumaran' in Tamil Nadu, where he honed his editorial skills and developed a keen understanding of the literary landscape. This experience laid the foundation for his future endeavors, including his role as co-founder of the monthly magazine Ponni, a publication that would become a platform for Tamil writers and poets. Iyya's career extended beyond the borders of Tamil Nadu when he was appointed sub-editor for the Tamil Murasu in Singapore. The pinnacle of his career came with his appointment as Chief Editor for the Tamil Nesan newspaper in Malaysia, a position that allowed him to shape the narrative of the Tamil diaspora and contribute significantly to the preservation and promotion of Tamil culture in Southeast Asia. He was also a founding member of the Board of Directors in Bernama. These roles not only showcased Iyya's expertise in journalism but also demonstrated his dedication to nurturing Tamil literature and fostering a sense of community among Tamil-speaking populations in Malaysia.

 

Family played a significant role in Iyya's life. His wife, Valliammai Achi, and his mother, Sivagami Achi, were pillars of support throughout his life. Together, they raised five children: Selvam, Pandian, Kalaimani, Ponni, and Subbiah. He was also a proud grandfather to twelve grandchildren and a great-grandfather to nineteen great-grandchildren. His family life was marked by love and mutual respect, with each member contributing to his enduring legacy.

Iyya’s unwavering commitment to promoting Tamil literary talent was truly inspirational. His contributions to the Malaysian Tamil Writers Association and his pivotal role as a leader in the first World Tamil Research Conference in 1966—a significant event in the history of Tamil literature—showcase his dedication. His extensive travels inspired many of his literary works, including 'Neethivenpa's Ethics' and 'Tamil Komu Nallulakam.'​ Uncovering the details of his journey, his accomplishments, and his impact on the Tamil community has not only been enlightening but also profoundly moving. It has allowed us to connect with his legacy in a meaningful way and to ensure that his inspirational story continues to resonate with future generations.
